Welcome to Vienna Youth Volleyball

Vienna Youth (VYI) Volleyball was formed in 2009 to meet the growing demand for youth volleyball in Northern Virginia.  The program is coed (girls and boys) in 4th-6th grade, and girls only in 7th-8th grade. VYI offers play at all skill levels, from beginner to advanced/travel level. In addition, VYI offers skills clinics throughout the year. VYI does not currently offer a Boys only league or a club level team. See below for a guide to the various leagues, clinics, and skill level definitions.

 

House League 

  • Beginner to Intermediate - C and B level players
  • 4th - 8th grade
  • Coed (girls and boys) in 4th-6th grade; Girls only in 7th-8th grade
  • Spring and Fall seasons
  • Generally one practice and one game per week against other VYI House teams
  • End of season VYI House tournament

Select League

  • Intermediate to Advanced - B and BB Level players
  • Middle school - 7th-8th grade; advanced 6th graders considered  
  • Tryout mandatory
  • Girls only 6s
  • Spring Season only
  • 2 practices and 1 match per week against other local teams
  • End of season league tournament. May include 1-2 local NOVA tournaments

Travel League

  • Advanced - A and BB Level players
  • Middle school - 7th-8th grade (Fall); 7th-9th grade (Spring)
  • Tryout mandatory
  • Girls only 6s
  • Fall and Spring Season in the Northern Virginia Volleyball League
  • 2 practices and 1 match per week
  • End of season league tournament. May include 1-2 local NOVA tournaments

 

Skills Clinics

  • All levels, indoor 6s (4th - 8th grade), players are grouped by ability and age
  • Generally during fall and spring seasons; summer and winter sessions depend on court/coach availability

 

Level Definitions

  • C – Little to no understanding of the game.  No developed volleyball skills.
  • B – Very basic understanding of the game and rules.  Some developed volleyball skills, such as passing and serving.
  • BB – Solid knowledge of the game and rules. Skill levels range from Advanced Beginner to Advanced Intermediate. 
  • A – Excellent knowledge of the game and rules. Skill levels range from Advanced Intermediate to Experienced.  All players understand rotational sequence, offensive concepts (i.e., 5-1, 6-2, etc.) and defensive positions and can apply them in competition. Game and player strategies are well understood (i.e., running offensive plays, identifying opponent weaknesses, reading opponents plays during volley, etc.) but may still be in refinement.
