Welcome to Vienna Youth Volleyball

Vienna Youth (VYI) Volleyball was formed in 2009 to meet the growing demand for youth volleyball in Northern Virginia.  The program is open to both girls and boys ranging from 4th grade through High School.  VYI offers play at all skill levels, from beginner to advanced/club level.  In addition, VYI offers skills clinics throughout the year, including advanced outdoor sand/grass.  See below for a guide to the various leagues, clinics, and skill level definitions.

 

House League 

  • Beginner to Intermediate - C and B level players
  • 4th - 8th grade
  • Spring and Fall (Commissioner optional) season
  • One practice and one game per week against other VYI House teams
  • End of season VYI House tournament.

House All-Stars

  • Intermediate - B level players
  • Invitation only by House League Coaches during Spring season
  • One practice per week
  • 1-2 league and local NOVA tournaments

Select League

  • Intermediate to Advanced - B and BB Level players
  • Middle School - 7 & 8th grade  
  • Tryout mandatory
  • Girls only 6s
  • Fall (Commissioner optional) and Spring Season
  • 1-2 practices and 1 match per week against other local teams
  • 1-2 local NOVA tournaments

Travel League

  • Advanced - A and BB Level players
  • Middle School - 7 & 8th grade (Fall); 7th - 9th grade (Spring)
  • Tryout mandatory
  • Girls only 6s
  • Fall and Spring Season in the Northern Virginia Volleyball League
  • 2-3 practices and 1 match per week
  • End of season League and NOVA tournaments

 

Skills Clinics

  • Winter sessions (Commissioner optional) - all levels, indoor 6s (4th - 8th grade) players are grouped by ability and age
  • Spring sessions - Advanced indoor 4s and 6s (9th - 10th grade)
  • Summer sessions (Commissioner optional) - Advanced outdoor sand/grass Doubles and 4s (7th - 10th grade)
  • 1 clinic per week, 2-3 hour session

 

Level Definitions

  • C – Little to no understanding of the game.  No developed volleyball skills.
  • B – Very basic understanding of the game and rules.  Some developed volleyball skills, such as passing and serving.
  • BB – Solid knowledge of the game and rules. Skill levels range from Advanced Beginner to Advanced Intermediate.  All players understand rotational sequence, offensive concepts (i.e., 5-1, 6-2, etc.) and defensive positions but may be working to solidify those skills.
  • A – Excellent knowledge of the game and rules. Skill levels range from Advanced Intermediate to Experienced.  All players understand rotational sequence, offensive concepts (i.e., 5-1, 6-2, etc.) and defensive positions and can apply them in competition. Game and player strategies are well understood (i.e., running offensive plays, identifying opponent weaknesses, reading opponents plays during volley, etc.) but may still be in refinement.
